REPORT OF NATIONAL INTEGRATED TYPODONT WORKSHOP (NITW) 2017

The National Integrated Typodont Workshop 2017 in association with Indian Orthodontic Society was conducted from September 21st-23rd 2017 by Department of Orthodontics & Dentofacial orthopaedics, Indira Gandhi Institute of Dental sciences, Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth campus. This 3 day National level workshop was jointly organized by 3 colleges namely Indira Gandhi Institute of Dental sciences, Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, Puducherry, Adhiparasakthi Dental College and Hospital, Melmaruvathur and Raja Muthiah Dental College and Hospital, Annamalai University, Chidambaram. This 3 day workshop was attended by more than 90 post graduate delegates and 25 faculties of various colleges from all over the country.

Day 1 (21st September 2017)

The registration for the delegates started at 8.00 AM at College Annexe block. The first session of the workshop started at 9.30AM at Halls 1 and 2, MEU.

The guest speakers for the first session were Dr. Puneet Batra, Professor and Head, Department of Orthodontics, IDST College, Modinagar, New Delhi and Dr. Sunandha Roy Chowdary, Professor and Head, Department of Orthodontics, Shree Bankey Bihari Dental College, New Delhi. The first session involved lectures and hands on session on Standard Edgewise Typodont (tweed mechanics) – arch forms, various loops & co-ordinated arches.

The second part of the session involved lectures on anchorage preparation and retraction mechanics for standard edgewise typodont at Ground floor hall, Central Library, Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth. Post lunch, all the delegates and organizing members assembled for the Inaugural function at Ground floor lecture hall, MGMCRI college block.

The Inaugural function started with prayer song. The dignitaries, Prof. Dr. G. Chandrasekar, President of Indian Orthodontic Society and the guest of honour for NITW 2017, Dr. Ashwin George, IOS, Vice President, Dr. C. Deepak, IOS Secretary, Dr. Rajasigamani, Organizing Chairman NITW and Dean of RMDCH, Annamalai University and Dr. Sudhakar V, Co-Organizing Secretary, Dr. Bhaskar V, Treasurer, NITW, were felicitated with bouquet and welcomed to the dais by Dr. R. S. Senkutvan, Organizing Secretary of NITW and HOD, Department of Orthodontics, IGIDS and Dr. Pradeep Babu Kommi, Joint Organizing Secretary, NITW. This was followed by the lighting of the kuthuvilakku by the dignitaries. Dr. C. Deepak then adorned the presidential jewels on Dr. G. Chandrasekar, IOS President. Dr. Rajasigamani, Organizing Chairman addressed the welcome speech. This was followed by Presidential speech by Dr. G. Chandrasekar and speeches by Dr. C. Deepak and Dr. Puneet Batra. They congratulated Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth for hosting and organizing the National Integrated Typodont Workshop. All the dignitaries from Indian Orthodontic Society and the guest speakers for the day, Dr. Puneet Batra, Dr. Sunandha Roy Choudary and Dr. Sarvaraj Kohli were then presented with mementos and certificates of appreciation by the Organizing team members.

The Vote of thanks was delivered by Prof. Dr. R. S. Senkutvan. He thanked the Honourable Chairman of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth Shri. M. K. Rajagopalan, Dr. Prashanth Rajagopalan, Honourable Vice Chairman, Prof. Dr. K. R. Sethuraman, Honourable Vice Chancellor, Prof Dr. Ananthakrishnan, Dean, Research And Allied Health Sciences, Dr. R. Saravanakumar, Principal, IGIDS and Dr. Shantha Devy, Vice Principal, IGIDS, for their constant support and encouragement. He also thanked the members of Indian Orthodontic Society and organizing team of NITW for providing opportunity to host this national level workshop at Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth. The inaugural program ended with National anthem followed by high tea.

The final session for the day was on Tweed Merrifield Mechanics by Dr. Sarvaraj Kohli, Reader, Hikarini Dental College & Hospital, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. He provided a brief insight on the Tweed’s philosophy followed by demonstration and hands on session on Tweed mechanics. This session was followed by dinner and banquet at Hotel Happy Green for all the delegates and organizing committee members.

Day 2 (22nd September 2017)

First session for the day was started at around 9:00 AM by Dr. Puneet Batra on MBT typhodont bonding and MBT mechanics, followed by tea break. Following tea break at around 12:00 pm, Dr. Sunandha Roy Choudary gave a brief introduction about Roth typhodont double keyhole loops. At 1:30 PM, the delegates were taken to Hotel Happy Green for lunch.

Various stalls were put up by the Platinum, Gold and Silver sponsors (JJ orthodontics, Ormco, Ortho One, 3M Unitek, Netway Printers, Dental Matrix, Medopharm, Rakki Dental Lab, E-gates, Voda and Libral traders) at the lobby, Ground Floor, Central library block for the benefit of the delegates.

Second session for the day was started at 2:30 PM by Dr. Jayesh Rahalkar, Prof and Head, Department of Orthodontics, DY Patil Dental College, Pune on the topic “Segmented arch mechanics, utility arches and T-loops”. This was followed by a tea break.

Final session for the day started with lecture on mechanics, anchor bends with intermaxillary hooks, derotating springs, uprighting springs and torquing springs used in Begg mechanotherapy by Dr.Girish Karandikar, Dean and HOD, Department of Orthodontics, Mahatma Gandhi Missions Dental college, Navi Mumbai. The day was ended with dinner for the delegates.

Day 3 (23rd September 2017)

First session of the day started at 9:30 AM by Dr. Surya Kanta Das, Prof & Head, SCB Government Dental College, Orissa, where he explained about Lingual Typhodont Mushroom arches, ligation and space closure in Lingual orthodontics. The lecture session was followed by tea break.

Post tea break at 12:00 noon, Dr. Surya Kanta Das continued his lecture and hands on session on space closure in Lingual orthodontics. He explained about CAD CAM lingual orthodontics following which the delegates were taken to Happy Green Hotel for lunch. Post lunch, the valedictory function was held in the same venue. Certificate of participation was given to all the delegates by Dr. Rajasigamani, Organizing Chairman, NITW, Dr. Surya Kanta Das, Dr. R. S. Senkutvan, Dr. Bhaskar and Dr. Sudhakar.V. The final session for the day started with preclinical wire bending for atypical situations. Certificate of merit and memento was given to the guest speaker by Dr. Rajasigamani, Organizing Chairman, NITW.

The programme feedback was collected from all the delegates and the session ended with high tea.
