CURRICULUM

Approved by Dental Council of India, the undergraduate and postgraduate program is designed to train students in the field of Periodontology and Oral Implantology. The goal of the curriculum is to allow students and residents to attain skills representative of a clinician competent in theoretical and practical aspects of Periodontics. The curriculum includes basics of Periodontology, periodontal pathogenesis, gingival and periodontal diseases, periodontal medicine, clinical diagnosis and decision making, evidence-based practice, legal and ethical reasoning, patient care, and practice management. The department trains students to the level of competency in the skills required for specialist practice either in primary or secondary care settings.

The curriculum is very dynamic undergoing constant changes every year. The curricular changes are approved by the Academic council comprising of Board of studies and Board of management. The syllabus is divided into must know, nice to know and desirable to know areas which make it student friendly. Teaching-learning activities in theory classes include 50% didactic lectures, 30% flipped mode and 10% pedagogy. Chairside teaching includes demonstrations, hands-on training for basic periodontal procedures for undergraduates and advanced clinical procedures for postgraduates. Other features of the course are clinical seminars, Literature seminars, special lecture series etc. Examination evaluates both theoretical and clinical skills. Assessment includes both formative and summative process; formative assessments are done periodically which includes both theory and clinical examination. The formative clinical examination is conducted as OSCE and OSPE. The evaluation process is improved by post validation. The outcome is incorporated into the evaluation process for its betterment.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Department organizes outreach programs to screen, motivate and treat population who do not have easy access to the dental treatment facilities. Clinical society meetings are organized by the department yearly once to provide a platform for the students to exhibit their case presentation skills. The department conducts a CDE program in the form of national or state conference to keep them updated in the periodontal practice. Students are encouraged to participate and present scientific papers at various national conferences. Department is keen on promoting faculty, undergraduate and postgraduate research. Currently, the department has 19 completed and 11ongoing scientific research projects. The department also boasts of 59 publications in national and international journals.
