Paedodontics and Preventive Dentistry

Department of Paedodontics & Preventive dentistry, Indira Gandhi Institute of Dental Sciences, Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, offers a menu of pediatric dental care to all children from infancy through young adulthood. Although our service is well known for its care of children with special health care needs, we cater to healthy children and teens. We also encourage parents to bring their children in for an oral examination by their first birthday. We are available for consults for “in-house” patients and at the Emergency Department. We also have a close relationship with the Pediatrics Department & Pediatric Surgery Department of MGMCRI, Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, as part of an effort to provide the most comprehensive care for all patients.

As preventive patient care is our priority, our professional team will perform preventive procedures using various instruments and devices, identify problem areas that need special attention such as fluoride therapy and sealants which will benefit the child’s oral health.D uring preventive procedures, our team will counsel about healthy habits such as brushing, flossing and smart snacking and develop a great health care regime he or she can carry into adulthood. A separate counseling room is provided to counsel parents starting from prenatal period along with the anticipatory guidance so that the infant oral health is well maintained by the parents.

The diagnostic services in our department are exclusively equipped with diagnostic equipment like X-ray, RVG, etc. X rays will be taken only when necessary to help locate abnormalities and appropriate treatment options will be recommended.

We undertake simple conventional restorative procedures using silver amalgam to more conservative /esthetic restorative procedures using glass ionomer cement and composites. Pulp therapy procedures are done not only for primary teeth but also for young permanent and permanent teeth. All the teeth which undergo pulp therapy will receive post-endodontic restorations to restore the form, function, and esthetics. Post endodontic restorations include stainless steel crowns, zirconia crowns, strip crowns, polycarbonate crowns, and acrylic crowns.

Orthodontics plays an important role in the proper growth and development of the child’s dentition and facial profile. In collaboration with orthodontics, preventive and interceptive procedures are being done on a regular basis.

Numerous surgical procedures are performed starting from simple extractions of teeth to minor oral surgical procedures. They include surgical removal of impacted supernumerary teeth operculectomy, frenectomy, excision of mucocele, and management of traumatic dental injuries to both primary and permanent teeth.

Certain special procedures are undertaken in our department:
Complete oral rehabilitation under general anaesthesia
Procedures using soft tissue LASERS
